His Holiness Mar Dinkha IV, the Patriarch of the Assyrian Church of the East has arrived in Arbil, Iraq for the gathering of the Holy Synod.

Shortly after his arrival, H.H. has made a brave historical statement that leaves no doubt whatsoever in the minds of the people, the Iraqi government and the Kurdish government in the north as to where he stands regarding our rights in Iraq.

H.H. Mar Dinkha has declared that the Assyrian people, including all their denominations, Chaldeans, Syriacs and Athuryin must have their own autonomous state in Iraq, connected to the central government in Baghdad.

Cheboo to H.H! He is the only Assyrian religious leader that has been consistent in protecting and honoring the Assyrian identity, the Assyrian national, political and land rights in our homeland, Iraq. This is the beauty of being independent of any foreign powers. The ACOE always had and still has total independence and it belongs to the Assyrian people. With this powerful statement, H.H. has done more than any Assyrian political party has accomplished so far.

It has been reported that the Chaldean church‘s second man in power, Bishop Shlimon Wardooni has stated that he agrees with H.H.Mar Dinkha! Was this his personal opinion or has the Chaldean church changed its position? All along, per Vatican’s orders, they have been pushing for administrative rights; not an autonomous state. For those who don’t know the difference, all administrative rights means is that the Assyrians can have a mayor or employees in the city/state councils, whereas an autonomous state means that we can have our own independent state. Meaning, our own state government/ parliament and constitution, our own police force, our own courts and judges, exactly what the Kurds have in the north. The only right we will not have in an autonomous state is to have our own foreign ministry and policies. We would have to adhere to the central government’s policies in dealing with foreign governments.
